INDEXTHUMB PRESENTS

12-16 JULY 2024
AFMI DEGREE SHOW | LAURIE GROVES BATHS, GOLDSMITHS

A three-channel, 16mm film installation alchemizing three generations of masculine trauma and experience.
Call On Me, Me, Me presents three alchemically-inspired 16mm films alongside a series of overlapping interviews between the artist and their father. Together, they dissolve the boundaries that have separated them as men, weaving together a shimmering tapestry of genders, histories, and bodies that spans almost a century of experience across the British Isles and South Africa.

Guided by archival family materials, ancestral landscapes/architectures, and an inherited transcendental impulse, the artist attempts to imagine and embody these masculine pasts and translate them into queered 're-enactments'. The performance scores, presented as screendances on hand-processed black and white 16mm, play with the possibilities for expressing and transforming embodied trauma, shame-based relationships, and homogenous identities.

The three films and audio interviews are spatialised throughout the install, offering the audience multiple points of perspective and ways to interpret the relationship between sounds and image. Enhancing this, the films themselves play off live video software to shape a work that will never repeat itself, an alchemical process that is as incomplete, performative, and trans-mutational as the relationships it articulates. The work is currently being adapted into a virtual simulation and a single-channel edit.
